Olivia’s First Birthday!

Olivia turns 1 September 28th.  We celebrated last weekend with Tom & Angie & family along with Grandpa and Grandma Harvey & Lois.

This weekend we celebrated with Brian & Sonja along with Grandpa & Grandma Boyd & Marilyn.

Here’s some pictures from the Pankratz celebration:

We went on a nature walk near Tom & Angie’s house.  It was fun for the kids to run around (and it was hot!).

Grandma Lois made a cake for Olivia that represents two legs walking, since walking is Olivia’s very favorite thing to do these days!

We made Beef Bulgogi (Korean barbecued beef) for the first time- it was pretty good!

As far as we understand it, the Toljabee is a Korean custom that takes place on the child’s first birthday. Several objects are placed in front of the child and what they choose is supposed to predict their future. The first 2 items they choose are the most important. Some of the traditional objects include:

thread: long life
book: scholar
money (or rice cake): wealth
ruler/scissors: talented with hands
knife: good cook
fish: outdoors person
musical instrument (we had a little plastic flute): musician
reflex hammer (we added this one!!): medical
USB stick (we also added…): technical

Olivia chose the thread and the money. Live long and prosper Olivia!!!  :)

Thanks for sharing Olivia's 1st birthday with us...especially the Korean traditions. These pictures will be wonderful for her when she gets older and understands more. The dress is absolutely beautiful.
