Why adopt?

A logical question that we've been asked and, at the beginning of our journey, asked ourselves. God planted the desire to adopt in my (Kari) heart many years ago, probably around the time we were first married. It came in and out of my mind, not strong enough, yet, to become a reality, but always lurking. At times, I would feel an overwhelming desire to learn more about how to bring a child into our family through adoption. At other times, the thought was unfamiliar and overwhelming. Dave and I talked about it on occasion, but never came to any conclusions or certainties, and life kept moving. As we discovered the joy of raising children, and the perils of pregnancy (!), adoption continued to grab a stronger foothold in my mind. My heart began to bond with this child.
We evaluated the relative chaos in our household with 2 young ones, and debated the sanity adding more. But, I thought, deep in my heart, we're not quite done. Like most decisions we make, we reasoned it out. Adoption is complex and uncertain; it doesn't just happen. We can't just take a couple of months and "see what happens"! :) We read about it, prayed about it, talked with others who had been through it. We had the information, but had to make this decision, for the most part, with our hearts.
We want another child, we want to give a home to a child who's already out there. We need her and she needs us. We're going to do this.
What will she be like? How quickly will we bond? Will she be horrified by the tall, white people who suddenly become her world (at least at first)? :) Will she scream on the plane the whole way home? This is the part where we trust that God has a plan for her and a plan for our family. He already knows her and He knows us. Who could match us better than the Creator of our souls?

I'm so excited to find your blog, having just started our own, and I'm excited to see your adoption story unfold. Having just taken the 15+ hour direct flight from Delhi to Chicago with a toddler who'd know us for all of 5 days, I can tell you he did not cry (scream) for ALL of the flight, just the memorable parts. :-) We survived and you will, too. Enjoy the journey.

Love,
Hitesh & Devon
